What is Agritourism and who can make the most of it with Granny flats and Tiny Houses

What is agritourism?

Agritourism is the use of a farm or ranch for a public experience that connects visitors to agriculture. The NSW government is aiming to make agritourism more achievable with recently reviewed policies. The agritourism planning rules:

  • help landowners add value to their existing agricultural operations and encourage the next generation to farm the land
  • help make farms more resilient to the economic impacts of natural disasters and other unexpected events
  • support sustainable tourism, giving people more reasons to visit regional and rural NSW.

For almost a year, the areas agritourism is permitted in has expanded to RU1 (Primary Production), RU2 (Rural Landscape) and RU4 (Primary Production Small Lots) zones in local environmental plans, and in other zones councils have nominated.

One agritourism land use is developing a farm stay accommodation – where visitors can stay in buildings or moveable dwellings, including tents and caravans, on a farm. The new policies allow farmers to fast-track setting up a holiday let through a complying or exempt development application if meeting the requirements.
